12 Things to Do When the Power Goes Out

1. Memorize your house--or wherever you are--by feel. Meander around with your eyes closed (just to even out/guarantee the darkness). With each ridge on the wall, with each edge of a picture frame, with each peck of a piano key, find a memory to associate with each of these picayune details.
2. Fantasize about someone. And I don't necessarily mean the dirty stuff.
3. Have a staring contest with someone. Maybe now you have a chance of winning.
4. Slide down a staircase in a sleeping bag.
5. Repeat above on a fire escape.
6. Push through the automatic doors of a hotel lobby and rescue the victims of a paralyzed elevator.
7. Contemplate a solution to the universal misconception of the purpose of a semicolon; this may take some thought.
8. Walk to the beach and witness the phenomenon of bioluminescent dinoflagellates.
9. Sell your talents on the street. People must be desperate for entertainment.
10. Master a z-centric tongue twister.
11. Find a bag of candy and quiz yourself on the flavor of each piece using only your nose.
12. Invest in a generator.
